If the letters “BAS” make your stomach drop a little, you’re not alone. The Business Activity Statement is one of the most common sources of stress for Australian small business owners — usually because it turns up right when you’re busiest. Here’s the plain-English version.

What is a BAS?

A Business Activity Statement is the form you send the ATO to report — and pay — a few things at once. Most commonly that’s the GST you’ve collected and the GST you’ve paid, plus any PAYG tax withheld from staff wages. If you’re registered for GST, you’ll lodge one either monthly or quarterly.

What’s actually on it

For most small businesses it comes down to three things: GST on sales, GST on purchases, and PAYG withheld from wages. The form looks busier than that, but those are the lines that move. Get your bookkeeping reconciled and accurate and the numbers basically fill themselves in.

The real trick: don’t let it pile up

BAS stress almost never comes from the BAS itself — it comes from racing to reconcile three months of transactions the week it’s due. The fix is boring but it works: keep your books up to date as you go, so by lodgement time the figures are already right. Our bookkeeping and BAS services are built around exactly that.

Quarterly or monthly?

Most small businesses lodge quarterly, following the financial-year cycle. The ATO sets the due dates, and they shift slightly depending on whether you lodge yourself or through a registered BAS agent — so always confirm your exact dates with the ATO or your agent rather than guessing.
